Medical Marijuana Arrives in Florida

It’s here.  Medical Marijuana has arrived in Florida.

Governor Rick Scott signed the law on Monday, June 16th,  making Florida the 22nd state to legalize medical marijuana.  As part of the “Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act,” the state will permit very limited marijuana sales for medical use only.

Beginning January 1, 2015, Florida physicians will be allowed to prescribe low-THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) marijuana treatment for Florida patients suffering from specific conditions such as epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and cancer.

The approval of medical marijuana use in Florida will be very different than the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in the states of Washington and Colorado.  The approved medical marijuana in Florida is referred to as “Charlotte’s Web” and is cultivated to have low-THC, providing health benefits without the “high.”

Cannabis producers in Florida will be limited to a few nurseries and growers that have been in business for at least 30 years.
