Poison Statistics
According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, each year there are over 2 million poisoning exposures reported to poison control centers throughout the United States. Of these poisonings, over 90% occur at home. And, not surprisingly, at least 50% of all poisonings occur in children under the age of 6. Most fatal poisonings occur in adults, especially older adults.
National Poison Prevention Week
Over 50 years ago, the U.S. Congress established National Poison Prevention Week to raise awareness of the dangers of poisonings and how to help prevent them. National Poison Prevention Week is an opportunity to highlight the dangers of poisonings for children, adults and the elderly as well as to encourage the community to get involved in poisoning prevention.
The 2018 National Poison Prevention Week takes place March 18-24. Contact your local poison center (1-800-222-1222) to find out what activities are available in your area and how you can help.
