Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Beginning August 15th this year, the annual enforcement campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” will launch across the country.  Together, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) and law enforcement throughout the country will increase presence and law enforcement to stop drunk driving.  Publicized through September 3rd, 2018, this campaign will encompass the Labor Day holiday weekend, one of the holiday periods with the largest number of drunk-driving accidents and fatalities in our country each year.

“Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over”

But the NHTSA and law enforcement aren’t stopping with 2-axel vehicles. In addition, a campaign targeting motorcycle riders will run in parallel to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”  “Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over” will remind motorcycle riders that operating a motorcycle requires not only focus, but also balance and coordination.  Riding a motorcycle after consuming alcohol can put the rider and everyone else on the road at risk.

Drunk Driving Facts that You Should Know

Here are a few facts from the NHTSA to help you understand the magnitude of the drinking and driving epidemic.

  • 1/3 of all traffic fatalities involve drunk drivers.
  • Drunk driving accidents are preventable – yet they kill 10,000 Americans annually.[1]
  • 1 in 5 children (age 14 and younger) killed in traffic crashes involve drunk-driving.
  • Recent statistics show that approximately 25% (27% in 2015) of all motorcycle crash fatalities involved alcohol impairment – higher than all other vehicles.[2]
  • During the Labor Day holiday in 2016, 43% of traffic fatalities involved drivers who were drinking.[3]
  • During the Labor Day holiday in 2016, of traffic fatalities involving drivers ages 18-34, 47% involved drunk drivers.[4]

Protect Yourself and Others

There are so many ways to be proactive when driving.  Here are a few tips that should never be overlooked.

  • Never drink and drive or ride. In the state of Florida, individuals are considered under the influence when their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is .08 or higher.
  • Plan ahead! If you’re heading out to a party, find a sober and safe driver!    Drinking and driving is against the law in every state, as well as in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
  • If you need a safe ride home, ask a friend, call a relative, use Uber or Lyft, call a taxi, use SaferRide, or stay overnight at the home of a friend or relative. NHTSA’s  SaferRide mobile app is available for Apple and Android devices.  Use it to make sure you have a safe ride home.
  • If you see someone driving drunk, call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Don’t let friends drive drunk. Make sure that others at the party don’t drive if they are under the influence.  Be a friend and help them find a safe way home!
