New Technology
As the National Highway Traffic Safety Patrol (NHTSA) works to end drunk driving, they are developing and implementing new technologies.
One innovative technology developed in conjunction with a private company is the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS), which can automatically detect driver intoxication and prevent a motor vehicle from moving if the driver is intoxicated.[1] Similar to exciting new safety technologies such as driver assist and automatic braking, DADSS is a new safety option that will be available on cars and trucks.
Another new technology that NHTSA is proud to provide the public is a virtual experience called “Last Call 360” that allows individuals to create a virtual bar scene where one can interact with others in the bar, order virtual alcoholic drinks, play games, and find out about the consequences of driving under the influence. The immersive “Last Call 360” experience, hosted by YouTube star MatPat, can be found at https://www.nhtsa.gov/lastcall/ and can be used on mobile devices, laptops, or virtual realities systems.
The NHTSA also has a SaferRide app available on mobile devices that allows users to contact a taxi or friend for a safe ride home.
What Can You Do?
Drunk driving accidents kill 10,000 people each year in the U.S.; yet they are preventable. Americans can do their part to help reduce the number of drunk driving accidents by planning a safe ride home each time they go out. Whether that means asking a friend or relative for a ride, using Uber or Lyft, or staying over at a friend’s house, never drink and drive.
As a reminder, drinking and driving is against the law in every state, as well as in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In the state of Florida, you are considered under the influence when your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is .08 or higher. Don’t get behind the wheel if you have been drinking.
