December is here. It’s the season to spend time with family and friends. We encourage you to enjoy time with others…. and even to enjoy that glass of wine or bubbly champagne as you celebrate. But, before you head to the party, we urge you to take a few minutes to create a plan defining how you’ll get home.
Make the plan first:
Select a designated driver for the evening or make arrangements for a taxi or another ride to get home safely.
Here’s why:
In the US alone, over 10,000 people are killed in alcohol-related driving crashes every year. Drivers break the law by driving impaired, putting thousands of innocent drivers and passengers at risk each day.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in partnership with law enforcement organizations, state and local officials, and highway officers across the nation, is asking all of us to help put an end to drunk driving.
The 2014 national drunk driving enforcement crackdown, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Buzzed driving is Drunk Driving,” will be in effect throughout the month of December locally, statewide, and nationally.* Police enforcement and high-visibility media will generate awareness of this critically important campaign.
Drivers should know that the enforcement of this campaign will entail a zero-tolerance policy for drunk driving. There will be no excuses, and no warnings. Drunk drivers will be arrested.
Don’t forget:
Drunk driving is preventable.
Have fun this holiday season…but be safe. Make sure you make a plan to safely get home before you attend the dinner, party, or other event. Designate someone as the sober driver or find another form of transportation.
